Baptist Health Notifies Almost 1,500 Patients That Credit Card Details May Have Been Accessed

by | Apr 20, 2018

It has been discovered that a former employee of Baptist Health’s West Kendall Baptist Hospital in Miami, FL obtained the credit card details of patients and used the data to make fraudulent purchases.

The improper use of credit cards was first noticed by Baptist Health on March 9, 2018 and the matter was reported to Miami-Dade law enforcement agencies and the staff member was terminated.

Baptist Health has not stated exactly how many people have been confirmed to have been defrauded by the staff member, although 1,480 patients have been issued breach notification letters to warn them to the possibility that their credit card details may have been improperly used.

Any person who purchased medical services using a credit card with the registration employee from August 2014 to March 2018 have possibly had their name, date of birth, and credit card details stolen and improperly used.

As a precautionary measure, all 1,480 patients have been provided with identity theft protection and credit monitoring services for one year without charge and have been warned to check their credit card statements carefully for any unauthorized tranactions.

Baptist Health is considering options to further safeguard patient health information and stop any further breaches of this nature from happening in the future.
